SUDDEN PARENT DEATH SPARKS MMS LETTER
Dear Maplewood Middle School Community Member,
As a community, we experience both joy and sorrow. Today I share with you the sad news that a Maplewood Middle School 6thgrade parent died suddenly yesterday. Those closest to the family are seeking ways to support them and help with their current and future needs, but such an event affects us all. Today, during the afternoon classes of all 6th graders, school counselors spent time discussing the passing of a parent, reassuring them that this is a very infrequent happening. Counselors discussed the feelings that all humans share at sad times such as this, and things that can be said when their friend and classmate returns to school.
This can be a difficult topic to address with children, particularly as we try to cope with our own feelings and reactions. It may help to read about children’s grief reactions and suggestions for how to talk to you child. Here are two sources that others have found very helpful. You can visit www.rainbows.org and www.good-grief.org to review their tips for talking to children about death and loss. We also have hard copies of the same handouts if you would like to pick them up from the MMS Guidance Department. Our school counselors are available if your child or you would like to discuss feelings that have come up as a result of this most recent incident. SOUTH JERSEY TOXIC TRAIN DERAILMENT
NJ.com reports:
More than 40 people, including some children, are being treated at Underwood-Memorial Hospital in Woodbury this morning afterthree railroad tanker cars carrying the chemical vinyl chloride crashed into Mantua Creek in Paulsboro.
UMH spokeswoman Molly Tritt said 11 people came in by ambulance — all from the scene — and so far, there have been 31 walk-ins, all with respiratory complaints.
The initial five victims are being discharged shortly, Tritt said.

TOWNSHIP $160,000 STORM CLEAN-UP PROGRAM ENDS
Please be advised that effective at the end of business (4PM) tomorrow Friday November 30, 2012 the Department of Public Works will end its storm debris pickup program and return to leaf collection.
The program which was implemented immediately after Super Storm Sandy allowed for the pickup of limbs and other vegetative waste that resulted from Sandy. The program has so far cost $160,000 for the disposal of the materials through an emergency contract.
Starting Saturday December 1, 2012 if a resident has tree limbs, branches or entire trees on their property that must be removed, they will have to hire a private contractor to do so.

MAPLEWOOD OFFICER INJURED
A Maplewood police officer received a head injury and an Irvington woman was also injured following a two-car weekend accident on Springfield Avenue, according to Capt. John Perna.
The officer, Justin Moen, was making a left turn into the Police and Courts Building shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday when his car struck another vehicle headed in the opposite direction, said Perna.
Both Moen and the woman were able to get out of their cars unassisted.
Moen was taken to University Hospital with a head injury. He received stitches in the back of his head and was released.
The other driver, a 56-year old woman police did not identify, complained of pain and was also taken to University Hospital. She was released the next morning.
The cause of the accident is being investigated. Moen has returned to full duty.

TOWNSHIP WANTS TO RECRUIT NEW BUSINESS
What will Maplewood look like in the next five, 10, 50 years?
That question is at the heart of a new initiative the township is launching to fill what elected officials see as a vast, unmet retail demand, while taking a proactive approach to shape the business landscape for decades to come.
The township unveiled its plan at a breakfast gathering of the local business and real estate community on Monday. Mayor Vic DeLuca and Mark Lohbauer, a principal at JGSC, consultants hired by the township, led the meeting.
"Too many shoppers, not enough stores," said Lohbauer, summing up his firm's overall assessment. Lohbauer said JGSC had calculated a $2.2 billion unmet retail demand among people living within a 10-mile radius of Maplewood.

RESCHEDULE LOST TEACHER CONFERENCES
At least in Tuscan School's case, they will not be rescheduled, instead delayed to March when the second conferences are held.
This seems quite a loss. These conferences are a key moment for parents to find out what is happening in their children's classes. Why can't they be rescheduled sooner?

TWO BURGLARIES MARK POLICE WEEK
November 19, 2012, Burglary; A Springfield Ave business had a window broken and cash taken from it during the overnight hours. Patrols observed the broken window at approximately 450 AM.
November 19, 2012, Burglary to Garage; A Rutgers St resident observed that their garage was entered and the garage door was left open. Upon checking the garage, they discovered their leaf blower was missing. The leaf blower was recovered by officers in the backyard of a neighboring home.

Hi BEAlievers! I have been very busy since Thursday night. My wonderful ENT, Dr. Nasseri, has insisted that I not utter a word until further notice so I am on total vocal rest. When my voice gets better I will post some videos for my fans so that you can see how great I am feeling. Music, Film and TV offers are coming in and my mom and I will decide what is best for me. I am going in to the studio in January to start working on my own music for my first CD and I am so excited about that. I will be working with some of my favorite writers/producers! REVISED POST-SANDY SCHOOL CALENDAR RELEASED

CHS FOOTBALL ENDS TOUGH SEASON WITH LOSS

Irvington scored 25 points in the fourth quarter as it defeated Columbia, 38-24, yesterday in Maplewood before a crowd of 1,200.
Willie Barr returned an interception 45 yards for Irvington to open the fourth-quarter scoring. He followed that with a 42-yard touchdown run to give Irvington a 25-18 lead.
Devon Davis ran for a 22-yard touchdown and Samaad Jenkins returned an interception 48 yards for a score as Irvington opened a 38-18 lead in the fourth.
Devon Davis scored on a five-yard run in the first quarter for Irvington, but a Columbia safety and a seven-yard scoring run by Deion Hudson gave Columbia a 10-6 lead after the first quarter.
Hudson also connected with Tyshawn Thomas for a five-yard touchdown for Columbia as it led 18-13 at halftime.
The third quarter was scoreless.

BEATRICE MILLER THROAT PROBLEMS
I know I haven't sounded my best the last two days, I have a hemorrhage on one of my vocal chords. I love you all for being there for me! :)

The great 13-year-old from Maplewood Middle School who was open about her challenges and thoughts and had a great performance Wednesday night was one of two who had to leave.
It was down to two who had to "sing for survival." Below is her great performance from last night.
But it was sadly not enough as the judges informed her that she had to leave.
But we know it is only a chance for her to work on her next performing challenge and that she has a great career ahead.

November 12, 2012, Burglary, A Laurel Ave residence was entered and jewelry taken during the daytime hours.
November 13, 2012, Theft from Vehicle; During the overnight hours two vehicles on Coolidge Rd were entered and items were removed. Both vehicles were locked and had windows broken to gain entry.
November 13, 2012, During the overnight hours a Rutgers St business had two batteries taken from a work truck.
November 14, 2012, A Woodside Rd resident reported that during the daytime the home was entered and jewelry and a television were taken.
November 15, 2012, Theft from Vehicle, A Milton St resident reported that their unlocked vehicle was entered and a GPS unit taken.
November 16, 2012, Theft from Vehicle, A Ridgewood Rd resident was unloading items from their vehicle when a male on a bicycle approached and remove her purse from the car.
