Curbside Collection of Storm Damaged Household Items

The Township of Maplewood will be picking up water-damaged household items curbside starting this Friday September 2 and again on Saturday September 3 and Wednesday September 7.

Curbside Collection of Storm Damaged Household Items

Residents who have water or storm damaged household items can place them at their curbs the night before the pickup day after 6PM and before 5AM the day of collection. The Township is hiring a private hauler to collect the items. Collection will take place as quickly as possible, however depending on the response there is a possibility that the contractor may have to come back the following day (NOT Sunday or Monday) to finish the collection.

Battery Charging Outlets Available

For those still without electricity, you may charge your batteries for electronic equipment such as cell phones, tablets and laptop computers at Town Hall, and the main and branch libraries. First come, first serve during normal business hours.

DE LUCA UPDATE

Seems the township is planing a post-hurricane debris pick-up a per mayor's latest MOL note:


The Township is working on a plan for the pick up of storm damaged bulk waste. If you have items that can fit in a bag for regular pick up, please do so. For larger items, the Township will work out a plan and notify residents. Right now all are resources are assigned to tree and road cleanup.

SHOWERS AVAILABLE

This just in from the township:

Showers are available at the Maplewood Community Pool facility on Boyden Avenue for those who need to use them because of the water emergency. Anyone wishing to use the showers can do so now through Labor Day from Noon to 7:45PM. The pool facility closes promptly at 8PM. You must supply your own towel and soap.

PSE&G DELAYS

The live wires down at Valley and Tuscan, causing huge backups on some major areas, are still down since Monday.


Just passed today and two PSE&G guys sitting there waiting.

COLUMBIA FOOTBALL SCHEDULE IS OUT

As Columbia High plays its third scrimmage of the pre-season today at 6 p.m. at Brick, we offer the schedule for the upcoming season.


First game of the season is Friday, Sept. 9 at Kearny. First home game is Friday, Sept. 16 against East Orange.


Let's see if they can repeat their great playoff-level seasons of the past two years. Go Cougars!

DOWNED POWER LINE CAUSING MAJOR TRAFFIC PROBLEMS

Valley Street between Baker and Tuscan, a busy route on any day, remained shutdown since last night, causing traffic backups and diverted cars on to side streets.


A downed power line was the cause and appeared to be no closer to getting fixed this morning, but police and PSE&G were on scene.

NJ American Water's latest bad news notice:



New Jersey American Water Expects Gradual Return to Normal Water Service

New Jersey American Water anticipates customers in Essex and Union Counties who have been without water or who have had low water pressure will see a gradual return to normal service over the next two weeks. The company estimates that its Canoe Brook Water Treatment Plant in Millburn, Essex County will begin to recover from severe flooding and a loss of power from Hurricane Irene beginning late this week, and the plant is expected to be fully operational within two weeks.
Customers in West Orange, Short Hills, Millburn, Maplewood, Irvington, Springfield, and Summit could see service improvements by the end of the week continuing through next week. As water service recovers over the next several days, customers may still be under a boil water advisory, and water service pressures may vary in different areas.
The boil water advisory has been in place since Sunday morning for the municipalities listed above and will remain in effect until the results of water samples indicate that water pressures have recovered and stabilized and that the water meets state and federal standards for drinking water.
New Jersey American Water will provide information to customers as to when the advisory is lifted through customer phone notification system, the news media, on the company’s web site (www.newjerseyamwater.com), and on its Facebook page (www.facebook.com/newjerseyamericanwater).
For updated information, customers can visit Jersey American Water’s website at www.newjerseyamwater.com, under the Alerts Notifications section.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection requires us to issue the following advisory:

The Department of Environmental Protection has determined that a potential or actual threat to the quality of water being provided to you currently exists. Therefore until further notice, bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute and allow to cool before using for consumption; drinking, ice cubes, washing vegetables and fruit, and for brushing teeth. Please continue to boil your water until you are notified that the water quality is acceptable.
New Jersey American Water also recommends the following steps:
 Throw away uncooked food or beverages or ice cubes if made with tap water during the day of the advisory;
 Keep boiled water in the refrigerator for drinking;
 Rinse hand-washed dishes for a minute in diluted bleach (one tablespoon of household bleach per gallon of tap water) or clean your dishes in a dishwasher using the hot wash cycle and dry cycle.
 Do not swallow water while you are showering or bathing;
 Provide pets with boiled water after cooling;
 Do not use home filtering devices in place of boiling or using bottled water; most home water filters will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms;
 Use only boiled water to treat minor injuries.
Please be advised that the company is doing all it can to make sure water is of the highest quality. New Jersey American Water Company will notify customers as soon as the advisory is lifted. If customers have any questions they may call 1-800-652-6987.

Scanner indicates police have a shortage of barricades for all of the post-Irene needs.

The South Mountain YMCA will be Closed for Tuesday, August 30th

Our building still does not have electricity or water, and as a result the South Mountain YMCA will be closed Tuesday, August 30th for all child care and vacation camp programs.  We apologize for any inconvenience. OUT ON A LIMB

The Township of Maplewood Department of Public Works will be going around to collect limbs which have fallen in the storm.  Residents will have until September 4, 2011 to put the limbs at the curb.  They will be going from section to section, when they have completed your section next week that be considered the final collection.  Please do not place the limbs in places on the street that will cause an unsafe driving situation.  If you have any questions you can call the Department of Public Works at 973-762-1175.

TOWNSHIP OFFERING NON-DRINKING WATER AT THE POOL

While NJ American Water is giving drinking water away, the township is giving non-drinking water away as per this e-mail:


NON-DRINKABLE water is available at the Maplewood Pool today (8/29) from Noon to 7:45PM. Residents can bring their own buckets or other containers to the Maplewood Pool Parking Lot (187 Boyden Avenue) and fill them with non-drinkable water. This water can be used to flush toilets and allow residents to use their drinkable water for other purposes such as cooking and brushing their teeth. The non-drinkable water comes from a township well used to supply water to fill the pool.

The underground train station tunnel was a small lake.

Found this house on Bowdoin Street and many neighbors helping to clear the fallen tree.

NJ AMERICAN WATER HANDING OUT WATER

With NJ American Water ordering you to boil yours, and some homes losing water completely, they set up camp at the Maplewood Pool today and handed out two gallons each. 


They also promised a water truck later to refill.
