LOCAL MOVERS MAKE FRONT PAGE NEWS
Our own Harrington Moving and Storage got some national attention today in a New York Times story on people throwing out pianos.
This from the story:
The value of used pianos, especially uprights, has plummeted in recent years. So instead of selling them to a neighbor, donating them to a church or just passing them along to a relative, owners are far more likely to discard them, technicians, movers and dealers say. Piano movers are making regular runs to the dump, becoming adept at dismantling instruments, selling parts to artists, even burning them for firewood.
“We bust them up with a sledgehammer,” said Jeffrey Harrington, the owner of Harrington Moving & Storage in Maplewood, N.J.

FIRST AID SQUAD IN NEED
Good News-Record story on the ongoing need of the Maplewood First Aid Squad.
Some squad members say they are not willing to give up what they have built so far, so they go about their work with positive attitudes and determination.
"I love this job," said Igor Lyulev, a certified EMT. "We talk, we train, and we go out on calls. I love the environment with all my heart, but we could use some help because we are doing this out of the kindness of our hearts."
The squad says it isn't getting the support it needs from the township, and is having trouble staying open due to a lack of money, old equipment and a shortage of volunteers.

MEMORIAL BENCH DESTRUCTION ISSUE CONTINUES
Tom Kerns, one of the Maplewoodstock organizers and Maplewood Public Works Director Eric Burbank have weighed in on the memorial bench situation with these comments on MOL.
- Folks
This is being taken care of. The appropriate people in town were notified as soon as it happened. I am not involved in the process, but I am a member of the Maplewoodstock committee and we were informed that this unfortunate accident is being rectified. I just may take a little time.
TK - The responsible party is going to take care of paying for it. We were notified by them as soon as it happened. We have contacted the company that made the bench and they were scheduled to come out and look at it to see if they could repair it. We will be following up on Monday with the company to see what the status is.

TWO MAPLEWOOD EATERIES MAKE TOP 25
The magazine said:
LORENA’S
Maplewood
Until May 10, Lorena’s was Lorena and Humberto Campos Jr.’s only baby. Now there is Liam Thomas Campos, too. Anticipating the arrival, Humberto hired a talented chef de cuisine, Martin Rangel, who had worked at Bouley. This freed the boss to do more with local farms and work the bounty into the menu. Humberto’s sensuous, even sexy, French-influenced food, continues to dazzle: consider Barnegat scallops over parsnip purée with capers, pine nuts and raisins and a green-apple glaze. Meanwhile, the Camposes hired a noted Hamptons designer, Greg McKenzie, to redo the dining room, which now has a burnished bronze look graced by original paintings by Dora Maar, Picasso’s famous muse.

VERJUS
Maplewood
With his French training (under the great Jean Jacques Rachou of Le Côte Basque), chef/co-owner Charles Tutino cooks a lot of dishes you think you know, not all of them French—roasted chicken with tarragon, mulligatawny soup, bouillabaisse, steak frites. He may tweak them a bit (like gazpacho with lemon-Sriracha sorbet, or a bluefish niçoise), but one way or another this modest, self-effacing chef makes you sit up in your chair and think, I never knew this could taste so good. Most appetizers are $8-$13, most entrées under $30. Add Verjus’s small, discerning, reasonably priced wine list; the quiet, comfortable room; and the warmth of host Jane Witkin, Tutino’s wife, and you have a lunch, brunch or dinner to treasure.

BRAVE "KICK IT" KOHL DIES
Saddest news I have heard in a long time, the brave 12-year-old Kohl Angelo, who was battling brain cancer and had a generous community of family and friends who supported him and held several fundraisers to help his parents defray medical bills, passed away Tuesday.
PATCH reports it HERE.
This Maplewood youngster and his family showed true courage and allowed our community to help them out as many did. We were lucky to go to one of the benefit auctions and enjoyed meeting all involved. Hug your kids a bit harder today, I know I will.

PEN PAL LETTER ISSUE
Let me start by saying I am a
huge fan of the Maplewood Library and its programs for children, many of which
my kids use every week. This summer, the library has been something of a day camp
for them, with both using program after program.
I also routinely list them on
my site as regular readers know.
Among these programs is the African
Pen Pals, a great opportunity for children to correspond with kids from another
culture about their way of life. My kids have participated in this and will
continue to.
The last batch of letters received
last week, these from Kenya, included one that caught my eye more than most
when my 11-year-old daughter showed it to me.
It included a mention of the
local custom of male and female circumcision. The male circumcision did not
cause much concern to me as that is pretty accepted in this country, even if it
is also controversial. But female circumcision,
for those who do not know, is basically forced mutilation of female genitals to
deny sexual pleasure.
The World Health Organization has called it a "violation of human rights."
The World Health Organization has called it a "violation of human rights."
I was somewhat surprised that
this letter was given to my daughter.
When I contacted the library
director, I was told that letters in this program, which dates back more than
four years, are always reviewed.
But this batch did not get to
be reviewed because it was received less than a day before the children met to
receive them. It sounds as if this was a simple mistake and not a common
occurrence.
I remain a supporter of the library
and this program, but wanted to share this incident and ask if any other
parents had come across questionable letters given to their children.
I believe the program is solid
and the library director, Sarah Lester, said she stands by it.

3rd quarter 2012 property taxes are due August 1, 2012. If you have already paid these charges or your mortgage company pays your property taxes, please disregard this e-mail.
You may confirm that payment has been received or make a payment at any time by going to the Township web site at www.maplewoodnj.org. Go to the “online payments” menu and view whether or not your tax account is up to date. If you wish to make a payment, you may continue as directed. Either the payment will be deducted electronically from your checking account or you may pay by credit card. Please be aware there are varying fees charged for the use of online payments.
If you are making payments through your own bank’s online bill payment system, be aware that those payments are mailed to our office and are not processed electronically. Please check with your bank and allow enough time for the post office to deliver before the end of the grace period.

NJ UNEMPLOYMENT WAY UP
Star-Ledger reports in a big Page One story today:
TRENTON — New Jersey’s unemployment rate climbed to a two-year high in June, pushing the state farther above the national average even though nearly 10,000 new jobs were added, the state labor department said today.
The state’s jobless rate rose from 9.2 percent to 9.6 percent, its biggest month-to-month spike in three years. New Jersey hasn’t been this far above the national average in more than three decades. The nation’s unemployment rate for June was 8.2 percent.
Christie administration officials said what matters is that New Jersey has gained 24,300 jobs in the last two months. The state is still shaking off its post-recession hangover, they said, and in the meantime the jobless rate is climbing because people who had given up on the job market are hunting for work again.
