WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE TODAY MORE THAN EVER

Although there is no presidential, Congressional or gubernatorial election on the ballot today, it could be among the most important Election Days for Maplewood voters.

First, there will be two new members on the five-person Township Committee after today, with Kathy Leventhal retiring and Jerry Ryan having lost in the primary. And you can decide who they are. While Democrats Nancy Adams and Greg Lembrich are likely winners, GOP candidate Phyllis Scalera is also on the ballot and wants your vote.

And in the State Assembly race for the 27th District, incumbents Mila Jasey and John McKeon face what could be their biggest challenges ever with Republicans Tayfun Selen and Wonkyu Q. Rim gaining strong support, and funding, in the district's western end, which now reaches well into Republican stronghold Morris County.

Finally, the nine-candidate field for school board may be the most noticeable election and the most impactful.

With three seats up and incumbent Jeffrey Bennett not running again, the race has heated up with thousands of dollars being spent and many a campaign sign -- and mailer -- being distributed.

Given that the school district is still dealing with budget issues, enrollment increases and a new superintendent, those who are picked will have major issues to address.

The school district also spends nearly 60% of your property tax money, so it is an important governing body.
