MAYOR ON IRENE

Mayor Vic De Luca posted this update on MOL Sunday:

I just got off a conference call with the Governor's office and here is some information:

Electric Power:
PSE&G has almost 400,000 customers without power. Across the state about 1 million are without electric. PSE&G has brought in crews from other parts of the country to help their crews. The Governor's office said that residents may see power company reps come to a site and not do anywork. These are spotters who are responsible to size up the problem and deploy a crew to fix the problem identified. It may be downed lines or broken poles or blown transformers. There have been crews in Maplewood assessing and repairing problem spots. The Township will continue to monitor this work and press PSE&G to be responsive in a prompt manner.

Water:
NJ American Water's Short Hills plant has been flooded and there are also power problems there. I spoke to a representative in the NJ Department of Environmental Protection about the lack of water pressure in Maplewood and they will be following up. This appears to be a more difficult problem, given the electrical mess at the plant. Any water you do get from the tap should be boiled until further notice. NJAW is in regular contact with the Township and we will relay information to the public.

Travel to New York:
NJ Transit will not have train service in the morning. It may be back in the afternoon. The PATH trains will be running as well as NJ Transit bus service. You can get PATH trains at Newark Penn Station. The #25 bus on Springfield Avenue takes you to Penn Station in Newark. You can catch the bus at the corner of Indiana Street.

You can also take the #107 bus directly to NY Port Authority Bus Station. The 107 can be caught on Irvington Avenue at the senior citizen building just west of Boyden Avenue.

The two tunnels and the George Washington Bridge are operating in a normal fashion.

That's it for now.

Mayor Vic De Luca
