CHICKEN RAISING DRAWING FEW TAKERS

Looks like all of the discussion about being able to raise chickens in Maplewood is falling short with only a handful of potential farmers.

News-Record REPORTS:

Jan. 18 was the last day for residents to apply for the backyard-chicken pilot program that the township is testing.
Officials have limited the program to 15 households, with the selection done by lottery. About 15 people attended separate workshops the township held Jan. 7 and 11 to learn about the program.
The program is intended for people to raise chickens for egg production.

Health officer Robert D. Roe said Jan. 17 the lottery would be unnecessary if fewer than 15 households apply.
As of Jan. 17, about five people had applied to enter the program.
