MAPLEWOOD POLICE BLOTTER DETAILS SHOPLIFTING ITEMS, THEFT FROM AUTO

Maplewood Police offered details of the St. Joseph's Church employee attacked last week as part of its weekly police blotter, but with no new details or word of any suspect being arrested.


In addition, two shoplifting incidents occurred and a theft from a vehicle. Interestingly, the report details exact items shoplifted.


March 14, 2012: Robbery. The Maplewood Police Department is investigating a strong arm robbery that occurred on 3/14/12. At approximately 10:19 am, the Maplewood Police Department received a 9-1-1 call from the St. Joseph Church located at 256 Franklin Avenue where a 62 year old female worker of the church was assaulted and injured. It appears at this time that the victim was inside her office which is in the basement of the church rectory. The victim left her office for a few minutes and when she returned to her office she was confronted by a black male who was going through her purse. The actor then punched and kicked her about the head and body before fleeing the scene with an unknown amount of money.  The victim was transported to Overlook Hospital with facial injuries. This incident is being investigated by the Maplewood Police Department Detective Bureau. Witnesses are asked to contact the Detective Bureau at 973-762-30 with any information  



.March 14, 2012: Receiving Stolen Property. On 3/14/12, at approximately 2:45 am officers responded to the area of Lancaster Avenue on a report of a suspicious male walking through backyards. Sgt. T. Perna soon located a male matching the description hiding under a vehicle in a residential driveway. Officers conducted a field investigation and determined that Lonnie Askew, 40, of 241 Waverly Place, South Orange, NJ was in possession of several items discovered to be stolen from a vehicle owned by Lancaster Ave. resident.  Askew was arrested on charges of receiving stolen property, trespassing and hindering his own apprehension.

March 14, 2012: Theft from Auto. On 3/14/12 at 8:41 am patrols responded to 74 Parker Ave on the report of items missing from a vehicle.  The caller reported that unknown subject had entered a vehicle which was parked in her driveway. The caller indicated that she parked the vehicle at 6:00 pm and went to sleep at 11:00 pm. She checked the vehicle at 8:40 am on this date and noticed that the glove box was open with items scattered about the drivers and passengers seat. She further reported that the only item missing is her iPod.  The caller reports that the vehicle was left unlocked.

March 16, 2012: Shoplifting. On 3/16/12, at approximately 5:46 pm, Officers J. DeFazio and P. Klebaur responded to the Extra Supermarket at 719 Irvington Avenue on a report of a shoplifting. Officers placed Kenneth L. Grant, 39, of 3 Oxford Street, Newark, NJ in custody after learning from employees that he had attempted to exit the store with six packages of bacon and three packages of hot dogs valued at a total of $48.12. After further investigation, Grant was charged with shoplifting and obstruction of justice. Grant was also found to be a wanted person out of Irvington and Bloomfield and was transported to the Essex County Jail.

March 17, 2012: Shoplifting. On 3/17/12, Officers J. DeFazio and B. Rodrigues responded to an Irvington Avenue store for the report of a shoplifter in the establishment. Upon arrival officers spoke with the caller who had observed a female walking up and down the aisles placing items into her satchel before attempting to exit the establishment. Officers determined that Keshonda Ballamy, 38, of South Arlington Street in East Orange, NJ had attempted to shoplift Maxwell House Instant Coffee, Lysol Spray, Vaseline Intensive Care Lotion and Secret Deodorant. In total, the items were valued at $55.52. Ballamy was arrested and charged with shoplifting and obstruction of justice.
