FATAL CAR CRASH KILLS 2, INJURES 3

The Star-Ledger reports:

MAPLEWOOD — Two men were killed and three people were seriously injured tonight in a two-car crash in Maplewood, police said.
The crash happened around 9 p.m. at the intersection of South 4th Street and Essex Avenue, a residential neighborhood, said Anthony Ambrose, the Essex County prosecutor’s chief of detectives.
Ambrose said the two men were ejected from their vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Two other people were in that car, he said. One person was riding in the other vehicle, Ambrose said.
He declined to release the names or ages of any of the victims.
The three injured people were taken to University Hospital in Newark, Ambrose said. Some of the injuries were considered life-threatening, he said.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known, but Maplewood police Sgt. Kevin Kisch described it as a "major accident."
Maplewood firefighters had to pry one victim from the wreckage and both cars sustained major damage, Ambrose said.
County investigators will have to re-create the crash to determine the cause, he said.

This has also sparked a big Maplewoodonline discussion about speeding, which witnesses contend was part of the incident.
