EMERGENCY SHELTER INFORMATION

From Maplewood Recreation Department:

Emergency Shelter information:
Due to the impending weather forecast of extreme cold conditions, the DeHart Community Center at 120 Burnett Avenue may be opened as a shelter/warming and charging station. Contact the Maplewood Police Department for updated information on the opening (973) 762-3400.

Please be advised that in preparation for these types of emergencies, it is recommended that every household create a contingency plan which could include sheltering-in-place or contacting family members or friends to provide shelter if you have an extended outage or loss of heat.

In the event that you need to utilize the township shelter for an overnight stay, you are responsible to bring your own blankets, pillows, medications, toiletries and entertainment for your family. You can also use the center to charge your electronic devices but there is no WiFi access.

Limited food will be available.  Pets are welcomed but must be leashed or crated.
If you have power, please check in on elderly or special needs neighbors who may need assistance.  Given the extreme cold weather conditions, go to the CDC Guide to Health and Safety during Extreme Cold: http://emergency.cdc.gov/disasters/winter/pdf/extreme-cold-guide.pdf as well as the READY.gov website: http://www.ready.gov/winter-weather on tips for preparing for extreme cold and winter storm conditions.

In cold weather, wear layers of clothing which help to keep in body heat, and try to avoid traveling during periods of heavy snowfall.

Stay warm, and be safe this winter.
