MAYOR DELUCA VOWS TO "SEND A MESSAGE AGAINST VIOLENCE"

Mayor Vic De Luca told The Star-Ledger today that he wants to "send a message against violence" following last week's weapons arrests at Columbia High School and Maplewood Middle School.

He said the Township should not be seen as a violent place in the wake of these incidents, but added that efforts to curb gun-related problems will be reviewed, including a possible gun buy-back program.

"We want to assure people that public safety is our number one priority, and that we take it very seriously," Deluca told the paper, adding that incidents like this, "are by no means an everyday occurrence (in Maplewood), even though it happened two days in a row ... We need to do whatever we can do to make it not happen again."
