About 100 parents, activists, and charter school alumni gathered outside a New Jersey assemblywoman's office Tuesday morning to protest a proposed bill that they say would stop their kids from having quality educational experiences.
Their message – which they chanted outside the Maplewood office of Assemblywoman Mila Jasey (D-Essex and Morris) – was clear: "Our children, our choice."
The rally, organizers said, was to protest Assembly bill 4351, which Jasey sponsored. The bill proposes placing a three-year moratorium on increases in charter school enrollments starting next school year. If passed, it would disallow the Commissioner of Education from approving any increase in the number of student spaces available in charter schools across the state.
It would not apply to schools that have already had charters approved for upcoming school years.
