UNDERAGED TOBACCO SALES STING SET TO GO

Just call it the Maplewood Tobacco Sting.

Township business owners better beware that if they sell tobacco or related products to minors in the coming months, they may get caught.

Health Officer Robert Roe on Tuesday told the Township Committee that notices have been sent out to retail outlets that sell tobacco or E cigarettes to be on the alert.

Roe said that an under-aged resident will be going into local shops under the Health Department's guidance in an attempt to purchase such products. If the youngster is able to buy, the business will be cited with a $250 fine.

Current law bans sales of such products to anyone under 19.

But some TC members disagreed with the idea of warning local merchants, saying that defeats the purpose. TC Member India Larrier also said she would like to see a similar sting for alcohol sales to minors.
