TOWNSHIP TO DISCUSS RAISING AGE TO BUY CIGARETTES

The Township Committee tonight will discuss creating an ordinance to raise the age for buying cigarettes in town from 19 to 21.

Currently, the state minimum age to purchase cigarettes is 19, but at least 11 communities have raised it to 21.

The state legislature recently approved a statute that would have raised to to 21 statewide, but Gov. Chris Christie vetoed that effort in January.

Mayor Vic Deluca, who is proposing the change, issued this statement via email:

I think this is an important health issue that the Township Committee should discuss and gather input from the public. I don't propose that we make a decision Tuesday night but rather gauge the Township Committee's interest in having a fuller discussion and engaging the community on the topic.

The TC will consider discussing the idea at tonight's meeting set for 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall. See the entire agenda HERE.
