WAWA CONSTRUCTION CREW HITS GASLINE, SPARKS EVACUATIONS

Firefighters evacuated two buildings, one an apartment house and the other a multi-family home, at Chancellor and Springfield avenues after crews building the new Wawa Market struck a gas line.

Witnesses and fire officials said the gas line was struck by workers digging into the ground for the new convenience store, which caused them to close one block of Chancellor and sparked a strong gas odor in the area.

PSE&G was on site and shut off the leak within an hour.
