CHS EVENT TO MOURN LOST BLACK LIVES SET FOR TUESDAY NIGHT

Columbia High School alumni are organizing a response to the recent killing of two black men by police in Louisiana and Minnesota in the form of a Tuesday night event at the high school.

A notice from organizers states:

Meet us at Columbia High School Auditorium this Tuesday, July 12th to mourn the loss of the black lives taken throught the past decades. Come enjoy a night filled with open discussion, youth empowerment, and community strategizing.

Join leaders and CHS Alumni Cory Hardy, Felisha George, Emanuel Grant, Sydney Scruggs and Alfonso Spottswood as they introduce their goals, get more in touch with the youth and bring both towns together in love and solidarity.

DOORS OPEN AT 6:00PM.
We will be starting PROMPTLY at 6:30pm!

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ATTENDEES: At 7:00pm we will be splitting up the young adults up by male and female to host an Open Mic in the cafeteria. Emanuel, Sydney, Cory and Alfonso will lead and mentor the young men, while Felisha will lead and mentor the young women. In that time the parents will remain in the Auditorium and have the opportunity to voice their concerns and opinions on recent tragedies.

Mayor Vic Deluca and South Orange President Sheena Collum are also expected to attend.

There is also a Facebook page for the event HERE

This follows two related events this past week, a march from Maplewood to South Orange on Thursday and a candlelight vigil in Maplecrest Park on Friday.

We will pass on more details as we get them.
