MULTI-FAMILY HOUSE FIRE FORCES EVACUATIONS, SPARKS HIGH FLAMES

A multi-alarmed fire struck a two-family home on Ostwood Terrace near Edmund Terrace Saturday evening, causing major damage to the home and forcing the evacuation of families on either side.

The incident began at about 6:45 p.m., according to witnesses, who said the fire appeared to have begun in the rear of the first floor, quickly spreading up to the second floor and through the roof.

Maplewood Fire Department responded, with mutual aid from Irvington, Union, West Orange and South Orange.

Fire officials did not reveal any information at the scene about the cause, but it appeared there were no injuries and the flames did not spread to neighboring homes.
