It's no surprise that Hillary Clinton received 82.8% of the vote in Maplewood on Tuesday. That amounted to 9,940 votes.
But it may surprise some that Donald Trump, who came out with an upset victory in the election, took 9.7% of the vote in our town. That's 1,161 votes.
Also doing somewhat well were Green Party candidate Jill Stein, with 159 votes, and Libertarian Gary Johnson with 120. The other five presidential candidates on the ballot took a combined 29 votes.
Clinton won 76.57% of the Essex County vote, with 231,031 ballots; while Trump took 20.57%, or 62,059 votes.
Clinton, of course, won New Jersey's 14 electoral votes. But such strong support for Trump in this Democratic stronghold might be somewhat surprising.
