CHARTER SCHOOL PROTEST TODAY

A reminder that the protest of the Chinese immersion charter school being forced down our already over-taxed school district, without our approval and at a potential cost of at least $700,000, is set for 4:30 p.m. today.

On Friday, Jan. 6 at 4:30 p.m.,residents will be meeting at the Maplewood Community Center inDeHart Park to protest the application. More than 1,500 residents have already signed a petition that asks Acting Education Commissioner Christopher Cerf to reject Hua Mei’s application, something that has happened before.

NEW 7-ELEVEN OPENS ON SPRINGFIELD AVE.

The long-awaited, sometimes controversial, 7-11 at Springfield and Tuscan opened this past week and looks ready to serve.


We took a look inside and found it smaller than some, but a great addition to the area if crime and debris can be kept down, or out.


And it appears that the grand opening party is yet to come, set for Saturday, Jan. 14, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

SCHOOL BOARD BACKGROUND OKAY

If you saw that School Board President Beth Daugherty was quoted in this Star-Ledger story about school board members around the state missing their required New Year's background checks and wondered what the S.O.-Maplewood board's situation is, worry not.


District Spokeswoman Judy Levy reports that all of them have properly filed their background checks, which the story conveniently decided not to note.
