MARSHALL SCHOOL PRINCIPAL TO RESIGN

With just over a month until the first day of school, Marshall School Principal Angelica Allen has resigned.


Patch reports:

Marshall School principal Angelica Allen has resigned. She will leave the district on Oct. 1, according to a letter she emailed to Marshall School parents.  She will become Interim Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction in another, unnamed school district.

Superintendent Brian Osborne said today in a statement:

Dr. Angelica Allen, Principal of Marshall Elementary School, announced today that she has accepted an offer to serve as Interim Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction with the Irvington School District.

In a letter to Marshall families, Dr. Allen stated “I have the deepest respect for the faculty and staff of Marshall School and love spending each school day partnering with them to educate our children. The students at Marshall School are so eager to learn. They are and will all continue to be high achievers in a variety of areas because of their stellar work ethic. Affecting the daily lives of approximately 500 children has been a privilege and a great opportunity for both professional and personal growth.”

FIRST AID SQUAD DIRECTOR 'CLARIFIES' IN PATCH LETTER

In the July 26th edition of the News-Record, I was interviewed regarding the Maplewood First Aid Squad's difficulties.  Upon readingthe article, I feel it is necessary to clarify a few items mentioned in the piece. 

The South Orange Rescue Squad has always responded when called upon in Maplewood and continues to do so.  So far this year, it has been nearly 90 times.  In the past five years, we have done so over 850 times.  In that same period, we have not needed or received mutual aid assistance in our town.  Despite each ambulance response costing us in supplies, ambulance loan payment, ambulance maintenance, gas, insurance, building utilities/management and more, we stand ready to assist when requested.

Several months ago, the South Orange Rescue Squad approached our Village Government to request financial assistance to fill our financial shortfall.  The result of which was an arrangement in lieu of financial support where we would receive in-kind assistance.  At the same time, our governing body approached Maplewood Township to assist us, due to the large number of calls into Maplewood.  The idea was summarily dismissed by Maplewood Township officials.

We support the Maplewood First Aid Squad in their rebuilding, as their success would benefit us by decreasing our call volume in Maplewood.  The South Orange Rescue Squad leadership has a combined 28 years of experience.  We have reached out to the Maplewood First Aid Squad to offer to assist them in rebuilding their young squad.  We can offer them management strategies that might not have been in place.  In addition, while we are in no position to assist them financially, we have invited them to join us for training classes that we have arranged and paid for.

We stand ready and able to assist in time of need.  We are grateful to the residents of South Orange, Maplewood and the surrounding communities for allowing us to be able to help others. We also acknowledge the hardworking men and women of the Police and Fire departments of South Orange and Maplewood for their continued support.

WALDO DRAWING DRAWS BIG CROWD.

Words Bookshop ended its month-long Where's Waldo game with a great party and drawing for those kids who found Waldo in at least 16 local businesses.


The grand prize winner took home a collection of Waldo books, while dozens of others enjoyed donated prizes from many Maplewood shops.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT SET FOR NEXT WEEK

This reminder sent out today from the township:

Maplewood's Night Out will be held August 7th 6 to 9 p.m. at the DeHart Community Center at 120 Burnett Ave.

The event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, strengthen police-community partnerships, and to send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and are fighting back.

Event will include pictures with Batman, Karate demonstration, wiffle ball home run derby, plus prizes and give-aways for adults and kids. Hot dogs, refreshments and Italian ice will also be available.

All members of the community are cordially invited to participate in this year’s program. If you can't attend, the Maplewood Police Department asks that you observe the long-standing tradition of displaying outdoor lights and holding porch vigils.
