MAPLEWOOD WOMAN HIGHLIGHTED IN NEW YORK TIMES WAR ZONE STORY

Maplewood 19-year-old Lila Fari was spotlighted in a New York Times story this weekend about Americans continuing their "birthright"trips to Israel despite the recent war violence.

Fari, an NYU student, told the Times, "There was a feeling of uneasiness among the group because it made the situation less exciting and a little more realistic," when describing a bomb attack.

MEMBERS OF THE POOL WILL BE ABLE TO COME OUT AND TEST THEIR SKILLS ON OUR BRAND NEW OBSTACLE COURSE AND JUMP AROUND ON OUR NEW WATER TRAMPOLINE!

During these hours the diving tank and the 6ft area of the main pool will only be open to those members who would like to participate on the new pool equipment.

MAPLEWOOD POLICE ANNOUNCE NIGHT OUT PLANS

National Night Out

Maplewood Police Department invites the public to join them in the National Night Out against crime.

National Night Out will take place on Tuesday, August 5th between the hours of 6 to 9PM. The event will take place at DeHart Park, Burnett Avenue in Maplewood NJ.

The event is to promote various crime prevention programs including: neighborhood watch groups, neighbor home security surveys and crime prevention tips.

All members of the community are cordially invited to participate in this year's event. The event is free to participants and will include food, drinks, music, video game truck, bounce house, dunk tank and other activities.

Police car, firetruck and ambulance will be on display.

Kudos to Maplewood Police last night

Readers following us saw that we reported via the scanner that three juveniles had allegedly stolen a cell phone from a minor on Rutgers Street near Springfield Avenue.

The call went out at about 7:40 p.m.

By about 7:55 p.m. the scanner had cops reporting they had three teens in custody for the crime.

As we followed the action on the scanner, it became clear police were acting immediately and using reports via the victim's cell phone tracker.

To have such a theft reported, responded to and solved within a matter of some 20 minutes or so is a credit to our great police crew.

As one supervisor said to his officers on the scanner: "Outstanding!"

Calls It a Shameful, Frivolous, Desperate Political Stunt; Urges Republicans to Pass Bills Under the Democrats’ Make It In America Jobs Plan to Put America Back to Work

Newark, N.J. – Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) spoke out on the House Floor against the frivolous, politically motivated Republican lawsuit against President Obama. Rep. Payne, Jr. said that Republicans are wasting precious taxpayer time and money on a lawsuit that even the most conservative constitutional scholars have deemed baseless and unjustifiable.

“He is the President of the United States of America – the greatest nation in the world, the most powerful man in the world – and he deserves the respect that we have given every other president who has held that office,” said Rep. Payne, Jr. “[Republicans] will not stop at anything in order to have this president defeated and look like a failure.”

“When has that been our history? This great democracy we have has been a battle over ideas and a coming together in a bipartisan manner. Mr. Speaker, just because Republicans disagree with the president’s policies or political persuasion, they do not have the right to sue him. Even the nation’s most conservative Supreme Court justices have said that Congress cannot sue the president in these circumstances.

“Meanwhile, millions of Americans are out of work – including nearly 300,000 people in my home state of New Jersey.  Instead of Congress working together to create jobs, New Jerseyans are learning that Republicans are at it again, wasting taxpayer time and money on a frivolous lawsuit. My constituents are outraged!

“Democrats have a real jobs plan – the Make It In America Plan – to put America back to work, to bring jobs back to our shores, to build roads and bridges, to create a better education system, and to lead the world in innovation. My bill – the Green Jobs Act – is part of this jobs plan. It will expand access to capital for small businesses to create good-paying jobs in low-income communities. 

“We’re ready to work. I think it’s high time that our colleagues on the other side of the aisle say ok we tried everything, there’s one more thing to try: work with this president to move this nation forward.”
