STORE ROBBERY SHOOTING UPDATE - OWNER EXPECTED BACK

Almost a month after the owner of MS&K Confectionery at Prospect Street and Springfield Avenue was shot in a robbery, the shop is back in operation as owner Ken Parmar is recuperating at home.

A visit on Monday to the store, where the robbery occurred April 1, found one worker on the job. The employee, who said his name was Chris, said Parmar is expected back on the job within a month, noting the store had been reopened since April 8.

We dropped by Monday to chat with Chris, who did not want to be shown, but spoke with us off-camera below. He mentioned how the store had changed its layout to prevent future attacks:

ONE-TIME CHS SPEAKER BROUSSARD OF ESPN RIPS GAY NBA PLAYER

ESPN commentator Chris Broussard, who lives in nearby South Orange and was invited to speak at Columbia High School last year, is being criticized for homophobic comments he made Monday while discussing the news that NBA player Jason Collins had become the first major team athlete to reveal he is gay.

In an interview Monday, Broussard, who ironically was invited to CHS in February 2012 for a College Inspiration Night, told an interviewer Monday that Collins' gay life was living "in open rebellion to God."

BUSY SCHOOL BOARD MEETING BRINGS PRAISE, COMPLAINTS

PATCH reports on a pretty raucous school board meeting Monday, with concerns ranging from new programs to mice in the classroom:

More than 60 South Orange-Maplewood teachers and members of the public turned up to Monday night’s Board of Education meeting to ask questions of the board and voice concerns over the state-implemented Focus program andInternational Baccalaureate program.
Melissa Butler, sixth grade teacher at South Orange Middle School and head SOMEA representative, spoke first on behalf of her association. Butler said she was concerned that the Focus program, designed to improve schools with a low performance and graduation rates from special education students, was being managed too much by the state and not enough by the SOMA teachers and families.

DE HART TO OPEN SATURDAY

Looks like the De Hart debacle is having a reprieve, for the moment.

PATCH reports:

DeHart Park organic turf field will open on Saturday, according to Keith Knudsen, Director of the Maplewood Recreation Department.
"Everything looked good," said Knudsen, referring to this week's inspection by an organic turf expert. "We're hoping for full usage all the way to fall."
Last week, members of the Township Committeevoiced worry that the field would not be able to open for the spring sports season. Officials were also concerned that other local fields were being overused as a result of DeHart being closed. The field was open for last fall's playing season but had not yet been able to be used this spring

ST. JAMES GATE ASSAULT CASE DISMISSED

So after all of the claims, counter claims and court appearances, the St. James Gate bartender and the customer he allegedly assaulted, who allegedly assaulted him back, have shaken hands and apologized.

James Meade, the Gate bartender, reportedly had to pay $400 for medical expenses to Ethan Kresofsky for the injurieS sustained in the Jan. 7 incident at the bar.

But that is it.

PATCH reports:

An assault case stemming from a January incident at St. James's Gate Publick House has been settled and all charges were dismissed Thursday, both parties said. Three months after an alleged assault at the popular Maplewood bar, the case ended with both men shaking hands and apologizing.
At a hearing Thursday morning, Bloomfield Chief Municipal Magistrate Judge John A. Paparazzo dismissed all assault charges thatJames Meade and Ethan Kresofsky had brought against each another.

Why didn't they just shake and make up before instead of wasting court time and taxpayer money?

ST. JAMES GATE UNDERAGE DRINKING CHARGE STEMS FROM MARCH INCIDENTS

The full report is below:

NEW MAPLEWOOD COMMUNITY BUILDING PROJECT LAUNCHED

PATCH reports on the new Maplewood community building initiative:

The Maplewood Community Action Program (MCAP), a new community building initiative, held its first meeting Monday night at the Maplewood Memorial Library. Roughly twenty residents from different neighborhoods came to hear an update on public safety from Police Chief Robert Cimino and a report from Director of Public Works Eric Burbank.
The program is also intended to provide a forum for residents across the township to discuss a wide range of concerns and ideas and to share information.
Township Committeeman Marlon K. Brownlee, who spearheaded the initiative, told the crowd he hoped the meeting would spur an ongoing dialogue between residents and township officials, and that participants would take the information they learned back to their neighbors.

Next, we found out that the bar is facing a claim of serving an under-aged patron.

Now a sign outside of the tavern finds neighbors are complaining about noise.

MAPLEWOODIAN.COM SOFTBALL REACHES A TIE

Our own Maplewoodian.com softball team battled to a 1-1 tie Monday night against South Orange Pharmacy. The girls did great and came back to even up the match late.

Root them on in their next game, on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. against Baker Street Yoga at Memorial Park.

ST. JAMES GATE FACING UNDERAGE SALES CHARGE

First Cryan's over in South Orange was shut down for under-aged drinking and now our own St. James Gate may be headed that way, according to PATCH:

Maplewood Township will seek to suspend the liquor license of St. James's Gate Publick Housebased on charges filed by police alleging that the pub sold alcohol to underage patrons on at least one occasion, according to documents Patch obtained.
According to charges issued by the Maplewood Police Department, the pub also failed to comply with inspections of books of accounting.
Township Prosecutor Annette DePalma will prosecute the case on behalf of the Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC). The township, acting in its capacity as the local ABC, has authority over license holders in the city. The ABC decides what type of action to take against the bar. Punitive measures can range from a fine to revoking the bar's license.
St. James's Gate has entered a not guilty plea with the ABC, said Township Attorney Roger Desiderio at last week's Township Committee meeting.

This comes just months after Cryan's was closed after some serving to minors allegations

In addition, St. James Gate bartender James Meade faces his own legal action in an assault complaint that goes to court on Thursday. Read more on that HERE.

MAPLEWOOD GREEN DRINKS TONIGHT

Time:  7:00pm
Information:  This month's speaker will be Jonathon Cloud, of the Cloud Institute. He will be giving us information about New Jersey's new PACE legislation.
“Property Assessed Clean Energy" (PACE) is an innovative way to finance energy efficiency and renewable energy upgrades to buildings. Interested property owners evaluate measures that achieve energy savings and receive 100% financing, repaid as a property tax assessment for up to 20 years. The assessment mechanism has been used nationwide for decades to access low-cost long-term capital to finance improvements to private property that meet a public purpose. By eliminating upfront costs, providing low-cost long-term financing and making it easy for building owners to transfer repayment obligations to a new owner upon sale, PACE overcomes challenges that have hindered adopted of energy efficiency and related projects in our nation’s buildings.”
The Maplewood Green Team is proud to bring this tradition to you. At these events, held periodically, you will meet many members of our community, both those actively involved in our green initiatives and those just finding out more. It's a great opportunity to make new friends, to learn all the latest environmental information, and to help make a difference in our town. No fee, cash bar, bring your friends!

ONE LOCAL GIRL'S GREAT FOOD DRIVE - HELP HER OUT TONIGHT

Here is a great local way to help the less fortunate and a great example of one of our own doing more than her part.

If her letter below doesn't get you to help, nothing will. Start at tonight's games.

Dear Softball Families,
My name is Jordan.  I am in seventh grade and have been involved in MSO Softball for seven years.  Softball is a very important part of my life, and I am hoping to be able to combine my love of softball with an effort to help others.  For my charity project for my Bat Mitzvah, I am focusing on the Interfaith Food Pantry of the Oranges.  I will be volunteering at the food pantry, and I will be collecting non-perishable food items for donation.  I was hoping to include the softball community in this project.
You may be surprised to learn that food insecurity affects at least 1 in 6 people in the United States and that number is even higher in Essex County where 1 in 4 people do not know where their next meal will come from. The last time I volunteered at the food pantry, we provided groceries for almost 100 families.  The food pantry receives no government funding and is supported by food donations, food drives, and monetary donations.  Since so many families are affected by hunger right in our backyards, I wanted to request that the MSO softball families help in my food collection effort.  If every player brings at least one non-perishable food item to each Monday night game, we will all be able to make a difference in many local people's lives!
Here is the plan:  At every Monday night softball game this season for the 4/5 girls (Memorial 1 and Maplecrest 1 & 2) and 6/7/8 girls (New Waterlands fields), I will leave a labeled bin behind the backstop of each field where there is a game for drop off of food donations ... I will update you on the amount of food we have collected periodically throughout the season.  I hope to conclude this project at the 2013 All Star game.  Thank you for helping me to make a difference in our community!
Please contact me at jordansfooddrive@gmail.com if you have any questions or want to learn more about the food pantry.
Thanks,
Jordan
