Monroe will be signing copies of his new book, Earl the Pearl: My Story, at Words in Maplewood Village at 5 p.m. Saturday.
He took time this week to discuss his career, challenges growing up as a black player in the 1960's, the changing game of college and pro ball, and even his views on gay rights and why gay athletes need to feel accepted in pro sports.
Monroe also reveals how he first got the name Earl the Pearl and how he is otherwise linked with another athlete with a rhyming name, Stan "The Man" Musial.
