SHOT STORE OWNER "AWAKE" AND "ALERT," MORE FROM CRIME SCENE

More on the shooting of a shop owner today at MS&K Confectionery at Prospect and Springfield avenues.

The store owner, Ken Parmar, remains in University Hospital in Newark, according to a hospital official who described him as "awake, alert and oriented." She also said he had been shot in the chest, but was in the emergency room and had not undergone surgery as of 6:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, the scene of the crime, which occurred early Monday afternoon, was a buzz with reporters and locals concerned about what had happened.

This marks the second time the store was victimized, having been burglarized with lottery tickets stolen last August.

At the nearby St. Joseph's Church, a church employee was assaulted and beaten just a year ago.
