There are some athletes that shine from the very first time they step on a track, and there are others, like Sydney Scruggs, who need time before their natural talent blends with a strong work ethic.
For Scruggs, his time finally came this past season when he raised his level of commitment and passion and started to realize his potential, as the senior at Columbia evolved into one of the state's most pleasant surprises.
Scruggs was one of the most valuable athletes in the state to his team. He led Columbia to the Essex County Relays title and its first NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2 Group 4 championship while blossoming into one of the state's premier hurdlers.
