Are Jitneys dangerous?

The Star-Ledger reports on a state review:

They said nothing.
Yet by spending four hours attending a special state Assembly Transportation Committee hearing on “jitney” bus safety in Hudson County today — not even eight weeks after their infant daughter was killed in a jitney accident — the parents of Angelie Paredes said everything.
They want to prevent what happened to their daughter from happening to anyone else’s child.
Eight-month-old Angelie died July 30, after a minibus toppled a lamppost onto her stroller in West New York.
Her death has become a clarion call for jitney safety that has been heard 60 miles away in Trenton. The Assembly Transportation Committee moved its meeting to Hudson County, where Angelie’s parents, Maylin Hago Paredes and Jairo Paredes, listened to testimony yesterday about an industry that Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D-Middlesex), transportation committee chair, likened to “the Wild West.”

CHS FOOTBALL LOSES SECOND IN A ROW

Jake Rosenbaum ran for two touchdowns in the second half to erase a seven-point deficit and lead Livingston to a 17-7 victory over Columbia last night in Livingston. Rosenbaum, who finished with 18 carries for 146 yards, helped tie the game in the third quarter at 7-7 with a 12-yard TD run. The PAT was kicked by Mark Silvestri.  Livingston took a 10-7 lead in the third quarter on a 25-yard field goal by Silvestri, then Rosenbaum extended the lead to 10 with a 24-yard scoring run. Brandon Cohen had nine carries for 69 yards for Livingston. The Livingston defense was led by Chase Everett (nine tackles, one sack) and Franz Rivero (one sack).

TOWNSHIP KEEPS POST OFFICE DEVELOPMENT PLANS A SECRET

So it appears that if you want to see the details of the eight proposals submitted to develop the Maplewood Village post office site, you are out of luck.

Yes, the Township did release some part of the proposals from each company, which indicate a variety of broad ideas.

But the details of each proposal are limited to the powers that be, the Township Committee, who will make the decision themselves, perhaps in a closed-door meeting.

We made an open records request to the Township.

Their response was the rejection letter below.

Okay, well, let's hope they make the right decision as they do not want to share the plans with the rest of us.

MAPLEWOOD'S HOUSE CALL DENTIST

Stuart Rubin’s dental office fits into 10 carefully stocked plastic bins that are strapped to a metal trolley as needed and wheeled from his SUV to a patient’s front door.

His daughter, Lindsay, also a dentist, has her own portable office, set up exactly the same way. There are two more mobile offices used by three other dentists who work with them.

"I have it very well organized," says Lindsay Rubin, who has packed each bin with the tools needed for procedures ranging from routine cleanings to fillings or extractions, and even X-rays. Every tool is in its place, so that any dentist using the equipment can find what is needed with ease.

The Rubins have a traditional dental office in Maplewood, but for their Dental Home Services practice, they travel with mobile equipment that enables them to perform every procedure imaginable in a patient’s living room, bedroom or dining room. "We can adapt to every situation," Stuart Rubin says. With the help of laptop computers, iPads and smart phones, they have access to patients medical records, instant X-rays and more in home settings. Working on patients who are sometimes in wheelchairs or hospital beds, they fix broken incisors, remove or crown compromised molars, make molds for dentures or fix them.
