Free public events kick off with a Saturday Wellness Fair, Community Walking Program and Healthy Cooking Contest
Maplewood, NJ – September 13, 2013 – “Maplewood Loves Wellness” Week kicks off Saturday, September 21, with a Wellness Fair, Healthy Cooking Contest and Community Walking Program roll out starting at noon in Memorial Park. The Township of Maplewood, in partnership with Overlook Medical Center-Atlantic Health System, released the initial schedule of events for the week, which includes free daily classes and seminars designed to educate Maplewood residents about healthy living. “We encourage everyone in Maplewood to come out for the Wellness Fair to learn more about healthy living and meet over 30 wellness providers; we’ll also have details on the free seminars taking place during the week,” said Maplewood’s Deputy Mayor, Kathleen M. Leventhal. “We’re thrilled to launch our healthy cooking contest and new walking program this year; there is still time to sign up for these programs.” At the Fair, 40 Maplewood residents will be chosen via lottery to participate in a six-week pilot walking program, which includes coaching and a free pedometer. Maplewood food businesses will be preparing healthy food dishes during the Fair’s healthy cooking contest. Following the Fair, Maplewood residents can participate in free events throughout the week. Highlights include: · Guided relaxation meditation · Pediatric massage basics for parents · Mind/body self-care methods of Quigong for vitality, relaxation and well-being · Chair yoga class · Stroke risk assessment · Hearing screenings · Zumba® class · Health screenings by registered nurses Businesses can still apply to be a vendor at the Wellness Fair, and to host an open house.
