Dear Friends,
Please
help Save Our Reservation Inc. stop the proposed dam across the
southern section of the South Mountain Reservation in Essex County, New
Jersey! The US Army Corps of Engineers, in partnership with the NJ
Department of Environmental Protection, is considering a proposal to
build a 880-foot, 70-foot high earthen dam for flood abatement on the
Rahway River. Construction of the dam and the associated 110-acre
detention basin would irreparably damage our treasured century-old wild
park, a natural gem that is loved by all who frequent its trails and
fields. While dams are coming down all over the country, the Army Corps
wants to build one here in the middle of an urbanized county!
We want the Army Corps to take the dam option
entirely off the table. There are viable alternative solutions that
need to be seriously considered before destroying public parkland. You
will find these discussed in the Army Corps document referenced on our
website at www.sornj.org.
Save Our Reservation champions a more open process and a more balanced,
equitable approach to flood solutions involving all towns in the Rahway
River watershed. Please sign the Save the South Mountain Reservation Petition and help preserve this cherished open space. And then - very important - share this with all of your friends.
