RESIDENTS DEMAND SAFER STREETS AFTER CAR HITS CHILD

Residents living in the neighborhood where a seven-year-old boy was hit by a car last week demanded safer streets during Tuesday night's Township Committee meeting, where several of them urged the Township to install speed humps and other measures to reduce risk.

Those who live near the intersection of Lexington Avenue and Prospect Street, where the incident occurred on Thursday, said the area has long been a place for speeding and dangerous incidents.

They submitted a petition that they claim had 600 signatures demanding speed humps.

Several resident, including Joe Barnard, the father of the youngster who was struck, lined up to demand improvements. See below:




Mayor Vic De Luca, a Lexington Avenue resident himself, offered his sympathy and said police had beefed up speed enforcement in the area.

He also said an engineering study of that stretch of Prospect would be conducted and  urged residents in other areas to gather names on a petition if they want speed humps.
