TOWNSHIP HEADING TOWARD SUMMER COMMERCIAL LEAF BLOWER BAN

The Township took the next step toward clamping down on leaf blower and lawn care noise by agreeing to consider a total ban on commercial blowers during the upcoming summer months.

The TC directed Township Attorney Roger Desiderio to draft a resolution that would bar commercial firms from using gas or electric leaf blowers during June, July and August.

"There are so many reasons, I think this is something we could do for our residents this year," said TC member Nancy Adams, who raised the issue last month. "I think we owe it to our residents to try this small step."

The ban would not apply to private homeowners. First offenders would face a $100 fine, $200 for the second offense, and so on up to $500.

The committee first raised the issue last month when complaints were rising over such noises. The Township also issued new directives then aimed at making sure commercial firms are registered with the Township.

The decision to pursue a pilot program for the Summer of 2016 followed testimony from several residents about how the noise has impacted them:

The TC agreed to consider the ban at its next meeting on May 17.
