Principal Dara Gronau released this related note to parents today:
January 23, 2017
Dear MMS Families,
On Fridays, I address students about
issues that matter to them and to their community. Here is what I shared with
them on the morning of Friday, January 20:
We are proud to live in a community that
strives to be an inclusive space for everyone. One of the values we aim to
teach students is a willingness to listen to the opinions of others and see
things from their perspective. We believe in intellectual debate and our goal is to help you
to be as informed as possible.
So, that when you have an opinion
about your school, about current events, and politics at the local and national
level, your opinions will be based on sound reasoning and reliable information.
In the months and years to come, there we will be rich debate in our country
and abroad about the best way forward about many issues that matter to us.
At MMS we will challenge one another
to think critically and we will do it in a respectful and informed manner. The MMS
Investigates class is a wonderful example of students taking time to research
an issue in depth before forming their conclusions about the best course of
action. Our 8th graders have set a great example for us in this class.
MMS, this is your school. This is your
community. You make it the special place that it is. We have some exciting
things planned that students have asked for to continue to make our school a
safe and welcoming place for everyone.
We want to celebrate students and
staff who exhibit our school’s core values, increase opportunities for community
service, and have students serve on special assignment for MMS administration
so that you can have direct and consistent access to us. We look forward to
hearing from you even more and to implementing ideas that students have to make
our school an even better place.
