Monday we learned of a scary home invasion robbery on Academy Street, followed by Tuesday's tragic double murder on Northview Terrace by a troubled young man.
Add to that the brutal beating of a woman at St. Joseph's Church rectory by a burglar she caught in the act and many may wonder if crime is on the rise.
I would seek to quash those fears. Concern, yes. But it appears at least in the case of the homicides the incident was a family-related event and, however tragic, indicates nothing regarding safety in town.
The other two, of course, raise worries. But Maplewood is strong and has quality police who will do everything to keep and make this town safer.
In two cases, violent attacks on residents in their own secure home, or office in one case, by outsiders is alarming. We need to be able to feel safe in secure locations.
One of the observations that should add positive thoughts is the sight of Mayor Vic De Luca speaking with residents along Northview the other day seeking to ease their concerns and advise them that the township is here to help. He also sought no publicity for this extra step, one of many the mayor makes on a daily basis.
If you recall, a while back Jacoby Street had come under a small wave of minor crimes. Police and the TC reacted quickly to meet with residents and boost efforts to increase security and safety.
I have faith that such moves are already being made and Maplewood remains a strong, involved and safe community.
