MID-YEAR REPLACEMENT MMS TEACHER BACKED OUT FOR "PERSONAL REASONS"

Erin Mitchell
Maplewood Middle School Principal Jerrill Adams today informed parents that incoming math teacher Erin Mitchell, who was supposed to start today, had actually pulled out of the job on Friday, just hours after meeting her students.

You may recall Mitchell was the replacement for sixth-grade math teacher Julie Skrivanic, who left mid-year to take a post at Columbia High School starting today. She met her classes on Friday, shadowing Skrivanic on her last day.

In a letter to parents sent home this afternoon, Adams said Mitchell declined the job for "personal reasons" offering no more details. Contacted by Maplewoodian.com, Mitchell declined to comment on her decision.

See Adams' letter below:

Dear MMS Families,

I regret to inform you that the replacement teacher for Ms. Skrivanic’s math classes had to decline her acceptance of the position at the last minute due to personal reasons. Unfortunately, her decision was announced to us on Friday evening after a successful transition day, interview, demonstration lesson and introduction to the MMS community.

As a result, the MMS administrative team is conducting second round interviews and demonstration lessons with two additional highly qualified candidates. Both candidates are veteran teachers with experience teaching middle school and/or high school mathematics. We expect to complete demonstration lessons by the end of the week and announce a full-time replacement for Ms. Skrivanic by Friday, with an anticipated start date of February 16th.

For the next (8) days, two MMS math teachers will provide our experienced substitute teacher, Ms. Harris, with lesson planning materials and activities on the following topics:

Course Title Topic of Study
Advanced Honors: Proportional Graphs
Honors: Inequalities
College Prep: One Step Equations/Inequalities

Additionally, we are planning to offer after school tutorials to all of Ms. Skrivanic’s students to provide them with additional support. Details about the tutorials will be announced in our next update on Friday, February 5th.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation during this process.

Together We Can,

Jerrill M. Adams, MS.Ed, M.A.
Principal
