CHS PRINCIPAL TAKING RACIAL INSTAGRAM ISSUE TO D.C. MEETING

Columbia High School principal Elizabeth Aaron shows again why she is a top educator, advising parents today she plans to take the issue of the recent racially offensive Instagram posting and student reaction to its racial underpinnings to a Washington, D.C. event on Friday with the U.S. Secretary of Education.

She told parents via email:

Dear CHS Families: 

Thank you for the many emails and questions about the incidents of racism and bias last week in the SOMS and CHS communities. Many CHS students spoke at our Board of Education meeting last week about racism and their experiences in our schools. Their words were powerful and will shape work already underway – but nowhere near finished  - in our schools. 

This Friday, I am participating in a roundtable discussion in Washington, DC with the US Secretary of Education, Dr. John King, and a small group of other school principals from around the country. I am taking the video clips of the student voices and their written comments with me to share with the group and will leave them with Dr. King for his continued use, as well. The work still ahead for our school and communities around issues of social justice, race, equal rights, and access to full educational and economic opportunity is very much part of the work Dr. King has been engaged in since being sworn in just a few months ago.  I am proud to be able to bring Columbia’s student voices to him to deepen his knowledge of our school, our successes and the work still to do.
