Also this release today from the utility:

August 29, 2011

PSE&G Hurricane Irene Update: Aug. 29, 2011 at 5:30 a.m.

At this time, there are about approximately 265,000 PSE&G customers without power statewide due to the hurricane and resulting flooding. The utility has already restored service to more than 240,000 customers affected by the storm.
PSE&G has 6,000 employees supporting the restoration effort including 840 PSE&G and out-of-state linemen, an additional 50 crews that have now joined the effort from Ohio, and 540 tree contractors. While the majority of customers will be restored within 48 hours, customers should be prepared for potentially lengthy outages of up to seven days. Those outages due to flooding will take the longest to restore.
In addition to widespread electric outages, the heavy rain and storm surge may result in gas outages. Water could enter the utility’s gas distribution system, as well as flood customers’ basements and gas appliances. Customers are reminded to call PSE&G to report gas odors and to contact their local municipal officials for direction and assistance in pumping water out of their basements.

MAYOR ON IRENE

Mayor Vic De Luca posted this update on MOL Sunday:

I just got off a conference call with the Governor's office and here is some information:

Electric Power:
PSE&G has almost 400,000 customers without power. Across the state about 1 million are without electric. PSE&G has brought in crews from other parts of the country to help their crews. The Governor's office said that residents may see power company reps come to a site and not do anywork. These are spotters who are responsible to size up the problem and deploy a crew to fix the problem identified. It may be downed lines or broken poles or blown transformers. There have been crews in Maplewood assessing and repairing problem spots. The Township will continue to monitor this work and press PSE&G to be responsive in a prompt manner.

Water:
NJ American Water's Short Hills plant has been flooded and there are also power problems there. I spoke to a representative in the NJ Department of Environmental Protection about the lack of water pressure in Maplewood and they will be following up. This appears to be a more difficult problem, given the electrical mess at the plant. Any water you do get from the tap should be boiled until further notice. NJAW is in regular contact with the Township and we will relay information to the public.

Travel to New York:
NJ Transit will not have train service in the morning. It may be back in the afternoon. The PATH trains will be running as well as NJ Transit bus service. You can get PATH trains at Newark Penn Station. The #25 bus on Springfield Avenue takes you to Penn Station in Newark. You can catch the bus at the corner of Indiana Street.

You can also take the #107 bus directly to NY Port Authority Bus Station. The 107 can be caught on Irvington Avenue at the senior citizen building just west of Boyden Avenue.

The two tunnels and the George Washington Bridge are operating in a normal fashion.

That's it for now.

DAYS WAIT FOR WATER?

PATCH reports that water boiling could continue for days:

It posted this New Jersey American Water release:

On Saturday night, the flood gates were closed at New Jersey American Water’s Raritan Millstone Plant in Bridgewater in Somerset County in anticipation of Irene’s heavy rains and flooding. The flood walls have protected the plant; however the facility lost power and is running off of a limited supply of emergency power. High flood waters have prevented electric utility workers from reaching the inside of the plant or from working just outside of the plant to reconnect electric service. Company officials have been working with PSE&G, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the State Police to devise a plan to restore power to the Raritan Millstone Plant.  The company’s Canal Road Water Treatment Plant, in nearby Somerset can serve as a backup if power resumption to the Raritan Millstone Plant is delayed.

New Jersey American is asking its customers to reduce or limit as much water use as possible while the company works to restore the plants, as well as other facilities in its service areas. Customers should limit all water uses and refrain from any nonessential uses of water to conserve water. Recovery to normal operations could take several days and customer conservation will be necessary until further notice. Large industrial customers should also reduce their water use where possible.
