NEW MAPLEWOOD RECREATION PROGRAMS ANNOUNCED

Maplewood’s Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs has many new programs coming this Spring and Summer! Check out what will be happening:
TryCan ProgramMaplewood’s Recreation Department has recently joined the local TryCAN Program! TryCAN is a collaboration of Berkeley Heights, New Providence, Summit and other nearby communities that offers a comprehensive array of recreation programs for children with special needs or those who need special accommodations. No non-resident fees are involved and all are welcome.
Spring BasketballSpring Basketball is open to boys and girls in Maplewood and South Orange. There are three sessions accommodating children from grades 1 to 8! This is an excellent program to introduce some of the young ones to the game of basketball. It is a 10 week program, beginning on March 11th, which will focus on skill building and teaching of the basics of basketball through various instructional drills. All sessions will be held at Maplewood Middle School.
US Sports Institute Camp: Parent and Me Soccer, Pre-Academy Soccer, Soccer SquirtsParent & Me Soccer is a fun and positive introduction to soccer for children ages 2-3 and their parents! With a parent participating by their side, kids will have fun learning the fundamental skills of soccer through a program of structured activities, fun based games, and scrimmages. This is an excellent opportunity for you to spend quality time together while easing your child into social situations with support and confidence.
Pre-Academy Soccer for children ages 5-7. The path to becoming a real soccer player; Pre-Academy is the ideal step for players that have graduated United Soccer Academy's Soccer Squirts. Players are introduced to the basic techniques of dribbling, passing and shooting through structured exercises and fun, small-sided scrimmages. Classes are designed to provide a platform that teaches players the skills to progress on to our specialist soccer programs.
Soccer Squirts is the orginal age 3 to 5 soccer class for boys and girls. Often limitated, never duplicated; learn the game through a series of fun based games and scimmages. Each session focuses on maximizing participation and learning the fundamental skills of soccer through a variety of fun structured activities, all designed to stimulate a child's imagination and develop motor skills. All games are introduced and developed with emphasis on safty, fun and learning.
Maplewood Arts Festival
For the first time ever, Maplewood will be holding a full day of free performing arts events for the whole family! Incredible classes, performances and happenings will take place at both the Burgdorff Center for the Performing Arts downtown and at the beautiful new gazebo next to the Hilton Branch Library on Springfield Avenue. Summer Hometown Ultimate Camp
Ultimate Frisbee is a fast moving, non contact sport played with a Frisbee. Invented in Maplewood by Columbia High School Students in 1968, it has grown to be played by thousands around the world. This summer camp is one week long and is held in Memorial Park. Last year was it’s first year running and it was a huge success! Don’t miss out this year!

Drills, Skills, and Thrills Basketball Camp
This basketball camp program is a one week camp that is held at the basketball court in Memorial Park. The camp focuses on skill building through drills and instructional programs. Last year was also this camp’s first year and it was very successful. Make sure to sign up this year for some summer basketball fun!

A car that had just been invovled in a minor, two vehicle accident and had been cleared from the scene erupted in flames on Prospect Street on Valentine's Day, according to Maplewood Fire Department Deputy Chief Joseph Callaghan.
The car was destroyed, but no injuries were reported, said Callaghan.

BURGLARY, THEFT AND A PROWLER MARK POLICE WEEK
Maplewood Police released this information today:
February 11, 2013; Burglary; Between 11 AM and 4:30PM, a home on Ostwood Terr was entered and electronics and a gaming system were removed.
February 12, 2013; Theft from Motor Vehicle; At approximately 850 AM, a vehicle that was left unlocked and parked on Garfield Pl was entered by a male and two bags were removed. Officers responded to the area, but were unable to locate the male.
On February 13, 2013 at 3:20am patrols responded to a Hudson Avenue residence on a report from the homeowner that there was prowler in the rear yard of the home who opened his unlocked garage door. As officers arrived on scene an unidentified person only described as wearing dark clothing emerged from the rear yard and ran from the location. Officers chased the subject on foot but lost him several blocks away. No items were reported missing from the garage. A check of the neighborhood revealed that a garage down the street had been entered as well as a car parked in the driveway. The garage and car were unsecured at the time they were entered. A bicycle was taken from the garage and a GPS unit was taken from the car. The neighborhood check also revealed that a garage on Coolidge Avenue had been opened however no items were reported missing.
ANOTHER POOL FEE HIKE?
After last year, when the township raised the pool fees by about 30% to help offset a major renovation that included the installation of the popular water slides, there is a proposal to add another $30 per year to the fees to allow the pool to open earlier, on Memorial Day weekend.
Not sure I want to pay more just for a few weekends, but you may differ.
The Township Committee will consider this on Tuesday night.
