TUSCAN SCHOOL BRUSH FIRE

From Tuscan School Principal Malikah Majeed last night

May 21, 2014

Yesterday afternoon, a staff member noticed and reported a small fire in the mulch along the fence of the front lawn.

Office staff called 911 for assistance. Maplewood Police and Fire officials immediately responded to extinguish the fire. Maplewood Fire officials advised administration to keep children and staff inside while the fire was extinguished.
Maplewood Fire officials determined the source of the fire as a mulch fire or discarded cigarette.

At no time were we in any danger. However the fire charred the fence and burned a small portion of a bush.

We are grateful for the swift attention that we received from both Maplewood Police and Fire Departments.

Thank you for your concern.

Ms. Majeed

MAPLEWOOD MAN'S LIFE-SAVING GIFT

Alt Press reports:

A work connection, an extraordinary gift of generosity, and a stroke of luck gave Jaime David de León the gift of life.
The Jersey City man’s story begins more than a decade ago, when laboratory tests discovered high levels of a protein in his blood that showed he was in renal failure. He began kidney dialysis and went on the transplant waiting list at Saint Barnabas Medical Center.

Four years later, he still had no kidney. JD’s blood type put him at a disadvantage. He was a type O positive. People with this blood type can be universal donors and, as a result, their organs are in high demand.

“It seemed everyone was getting a kidney except me,” JD said.  His chances of finding a match were so slim doctors considered him for an experimental procedure that allows recipients to receive a non-compatible kidney. His wife, Theresa de León, came to the hospital to be tested as a possible non-compatible donor. But doctors quickly ruled her out because her blood pressure was too high. Despondent, she shared her story with a colleague at PNC Bank, where she works as a Vice President of Wealth Management.

The colleague was Ken Wenger, a Senior Vice President at PNC who lives in Maplewood. The two were driving to a business function when Ken asked her why she missed a day at work and she began to explain her husband’s story.

BEYONCE IN MAPLEWOOD

Singer Beyonce was spotted in Maplewood at an Elmwood Ave. location yesterday, apparently filming a video with or without members of Destiny's Child, her former group.

Police also were on the scene to control traffic when word spread and crowds gathered.

See reports HERE and HERE.

Township officials confirmed the event, but stated it was "kept low-key."

The organizers obtained a filming permit at a cost of $625 to film inside and outside of the home. They also paid for the cost of four police officers used for security and traffic during a 12-hour shift.

GOOD AND BAD STATS FROM SCHOOL

One interesting set of stats from Monday night's school board meeting.

The district announced that nine Columbia High School students had scored perfect SAT's.

Another stat, there were 16 cases of student bullying or harassment in the district last month.
