LIBRARY CHOOSES NYC ARCHITECTS FOR RENOVATION PROJECT

The Maplewood Library moved a step closer to its $15 million renovation plan by announcing the hiring of Sage and Coombe Architects of New York City to create a design for the main library, according to a press release.

It stated the firm will "fully engage the public over approximately six months" and "explore environmental and structural aspects of an enhanced library, as well as issues of accessibility and sustainability." It added that the design will "embrace and emphasize the library's location within Memorial Park."

The library's board of trustees chose the architects from among 39 firms that submitted proposals. See the full release HERE.

The Township Committee last year heard the first requests for funding of at least part of the renovation.

FIRE DEPARTMENT ISSUES SMOKE ALARM RECALL NOTICE

                     From Maplewood Fire Department today:

Kidde Recalls Combination Smoke/CO Alarms
Due to Alarm Failure

Kidde Fire Safety has issued a recall on Kidde hard-wired combination smoke/carbon monoxide (CO) alarms. The alarm can fail to continue to chirp when it reaches its seven year end of life even if the batteries are replaced, leading consumers to believe it is still working. This poses a risk of consumers not being alerted to a fire or carbon monoxide (CO) incident in their home. Approximately 3.6 million alarms were sold in the United State and an additional 1.5 million in Canada.  Kidde has received eight reports of incidents with the recalled alarms. No injuries have been reported.

This recall involves Kidde Night Hawk talking combo smoke/CO alarm with model number KN-COSM-IB and manufacture dates between June 1, 2004 and December 31, 2010. The alarms are hard-wired into a home’s electric power. The unit has a compartment on the back for the installation of a replaceable 9V backup battery. The alarm is white, round and measures about 5 to 6 inches in diameter. “Kidde” is engraved on the front of the alarm. “Kidde,” the model number and manufacture dates are printed on a label on the back on the alarm.

The affected alarms were sold at electrical distributors and home centers nationwide and online at Amazon.com from June 2004 through December 2010 for between $40 and $65.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled alarms and contact Kidde directly toll-free at 855-239-0490 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or online at www.kidde.com and click on “Product Safety Notice” for more information. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled alarms and contact Kidde directly for a free replacement alarm based on date of manufacture or a discount on a new alarm.

SOUTH MOUNTAIN SCHOOL SMOKE SPARKS EVACUATION

From South Mountain School to parents Thursday:

Dear South Mountain Community,

Just after dismissal today, the fire alarm was triggered by smoke on a lower floor. Everyone still in the school evacuated the building immediately, and waited safely outside.

Only staff and students in after school activities (after care, beyond the bell, play practice, Achieve tutoring, etc.) were affected.
The fire department assessed the situation, identified the source of the smoke as a compressor in an area near the custodian’s office, and shut off power to that compressor. There was no fire, only smoke.

The smoke affected the area near the custodian’s office, and some smoke also entered the auditorium through the HVAC system. The fire department used fans to clear the smoke. Once the smoke dissipated, they re-set the fire alarm and we were allowed back in the building.

As you know, the safety of our students, staff and families is always our top priority. We are grateful to the South Orange Fire Department for their quick response and assistance.
