9/11 MEMORIAL WALK

  • 9/11 Walks, a national effort to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11, has announced thatMaplewood, New Jersey will be one of the communities that will be participating in the worldwide event.

Maplewood resident, Anisa Mehdi, has organized the international event to showcase kindness and compassion in the face of fear and misunderstanding as we remember the events of September 11, 2001, and those we lost on that day.

Ian Grodman, a Maplewood resident, has been organizing the local event, intended to bring Maplewood and South Orange residents together on the anniversary of September 11, and to walk just over one mile with someone they may not have known before. Maplewood and South Orange are the perfect towns to participate in this event, as the community as a whole is recognized nationally for its efforts to be a truly inclusive community.

The walk will begin at Noon at Morrow Memorial Church, at the corner of Ridgewood Road and Baker Street, and end at St. Joseph’s Church at Prospect Street and Hilton Avenue. Pastor Chris Heckert of Morrow Church will address the walkers as the walk begins, and Father Manolo Punzalan and Mayor Vic DeLuca will address the walkers at the completion of the walk at St. Joseph’s.

All are invited to walk and talk kindly with neighbors and strangers in celebration of our common humanity and in defiance of fear, misunderstanding and hatred, honoring the victims of 9/11 with a simple act of hope and courage.
