MAPLEWOOD GETS LOW SAFETY RANKING

Maplewood ranked near the bottom of a state listing of safest cities, coming in 259th out of 353, according to ValuePenguin, a national health and safety data research and insurance exchange company.

ValuePenguin released such rankings for several states last week, which took into account violent crimes and property crimes per population.

It's findings indicated Maplewood had 169 violent crimes per 100,000 and 2002 property crimes. Since our population is 24,000 that is clearly a percentage ratio and not the actual amount.

Still, it was enough for the company to give Maplewood a lower ranking.

The Top 5 safest New Jersey cities were: New Hanover Township, Old Tappan, Tewksbury, Chatham Township, and Park Ridge.

We ranked just ahead of Guttenberg and just below Bayonne.
