Maplewood decided to fire its recreation director, George Rague [right in photo], effective at the end of the year, officials said Nov. 22.
Deputy Mayor Fred R. Profeta Jr. said Rague, the director for the past four years, was given notice a couple of weeks ago.
He said the decision was made by township Administrator Joseph F. Manning, who could not be reached for comment.
Profeta said the decision had nothing to do with potentially outsourcing recreation services to South Orange. He declined to elaborate further.
"I am not going to comment on personnel issues,” Mayor Vic De Luca said in a phone interview.
