Ten years ago, the Township of Maplewood took over jurisdiction of Springfield Avenue, part of NJ State Highway Route 124. The vision was to create a more attractive shopping district, fostering a sense of place where residents and visitors could shop, dine and enjoy. That vision included changing Springfield Avenue’s image as a dividing line in the community.
In 2001, when Mayor De Luca signed the contract with the NJ Department of Transportation, we had a parade to celebrate the start of something big. Now we are having a parade to celebrate the progress.
On Tuesday, November 8th at 11am, the parade will step off from the Indiana Street Parking Lot and proceed to the Hilton Branch of the Maplewood Library. Like ten years ago, the Columbia High School Marching Band will participate. The parade will include municipal vehicles and a contingent of local officials, Springfield Avenue Partnership representatives, and local business and property owners.
The Avenue will be closed to traffic on both sides during the parade but parking will be permitted before and after.
So why are they doing this on a Tuesday? What will it cost? And will it do anything?
