Two Columbia High School students, Ryan Morey, a junior, and Emily Yu, a senior, have been accepted into the highly selective Columbia University’s Science Honors Program for the 2012-2013 academic year. Only 400 of the approximately 2000 students who applied were accepted.
The Science Honors Program is offered free of charge to sophomores, juniors and seniors and held on Saturdays from September through May at Columbia’s campus in New York.
“The acceptance into the Columbia Science Honors Program has provided me a precious opportunity to listen to the inspiring instructions of the professors in Columbia University and study with the students who share the same interest with me in the science and engineering track,” said Yu. “It has also strengthened my confidence in becoming an engineer in the future. I greatly appreciate the encouragement and help of my counselor and all my teachers at Columbia High School (CHS).”
Morey first learned about the opportunity to apply from the CHS Guidance Department Newsletters. Although he was not accepted when he first applied as a freshman, his next application, which included a report of high school grades and an essay describing one's interest and background in science and mathematics, was successful.
The Columbia University Program offers courses spanning the full range of the pure and applied sciences, from organic chemistry to physiological psychology. Also offered are computer programming in Java and Calculus in the Complex Plane and introductions to particle physics and physical cosmology.
Mr. Alan Levin, supervisor of science, 6-12, was very proud that two Columbia students were accepted. “The Columbia University Science Honors Program is one of the oldest and most prestigious science programs for high school students” he said. “Started in 1959, this program continues to attract the best science students in the New York area to a yearlong study of advanced science on Saturday mornings. I am thrilled to hear that Ryan and Emily will be joining the short list of past CHS students who have participated in this wonderful experience.”
