But does he deserve it?
His contract stipulates that he can received up to a 14.99% bonus based on merit. That would mean more than $26,000 based on his $177,500 salary. The board apparently believes he deserves at least $23,000 of that.
The resolution up for a vote tonight makes no mention of the basis for the bonus, other than the amount.
Since he began work on Aug, 1, 2015, Ramos has some accomplishments, organizing an Education Summit and instituting the popular Let's Talk web portal that allows requests and questions to be submitted with a two-day minimum response. It has been considered a success, while costing $19,000 per year.
But in that time the district also has seen the loss of 15 staffers, with 11 of them teachers - nine at Columbia High School alone.
The district has been criticized for its handling of the CHS baseball coach alleged bullying scandal, which has so far cost at least $25,000 in legal fees and the hiring of an outside investigator.
Ramos also hired a former colleague last year at a cost of $8,000 to facilitate a one-day board retreat. He recently took a three-week vacation in August at a time when Maplewood Middle School had to scramble to find a new principal when former principal Jerrill Adams left in June.
There was also the recent problematic hiring of a new South Orange Middle School teacher who had been fired from a previous job for poor performance and ineffective work - a move that was reversed after parental complaints.
Several top administrators have also left the district for other jobs since Ramos began, among them Adams, Business Administrator Cheryl Schneider, Guidance Director Jennifer Giordano, and Board Attorney Phil Stern.
