ESSEX COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE INVESTIGATING MAPLEWOOD POLICE

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into possible misconduct by the Maplewood Police Department related to events of July 5, 2016, according to sources.

The Maplewood Police announced last month they were conducting their own internal investigation of claims that the misconduct occurred after the July 5 fireworks, with plans to forward findings to the State Attorney General.

But sources revealed the Prosecutor's Office as recently as last week had joined in with their own investigation and informed the Township of the probe. It is unclear exactly what kind of misconduct might have occurred.

The Prosecutor's Office would not confirm or deny the investigation, while Mayor Vic Deluca declined comment citing an "active investigation."

The Maplewood Police Department has yet to respond to requests for comment today.
