ESSEX COUNTY — Rocio Rivera pleaded guilty to voter fraud last year when she admitted to fraudulently submitting absentee ballots in an effort to elect Teresa Ruiz to the state Senate for Essex County in 2007. As part of a plea deal, Rivera agreed to resign from her job as a clerk in the Essex County Sheriff's Office.
She never did.
In March, a judge sentenced the 52-year-old Rivera to three years' probation for third-degree absentee ballot fraud. Still, Rivera did not resign from the sheriff’s office, where she has worked for 15 years.
Rivera remains in the civil division that processes foreclosures, Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura confirmed Tuesday afternoon. The sheriff said he never received notice from the state ordering Rivera to forfeit her position.
