The Township has posted a 40-page redevelopment plan for the main post office site and related areas in Maplewood Village, as well as a schedule for review that has the first public meeting on the proposal set for next Tuesday's Township Committee meeting.
After months of discussion and meetings, the proposed plan indicates the entire post office building would be demolished and a new facility built, although any such action requires township approval.
The report also states additional housing is possible and even a hotel, but with parking remaining at the same or an increased level.
It adds:
The Redevelopment Plan will redefine the existing Maplewood Village
Post Office site and adjoining areas. The introduction of new housing
to the rehabilitation area will promote a strong residential base in this
portion of Maplewood, providing a stronger market to support commercial
uses in Maplewood Village. Other potential upper floor uses such as offices
or a hotel would also benefit Maplewood Village by bringing workers and/or
visitors to the area.
Development will be transit-oriented in nature to take advantage of the adjacent
New Jersey Transit railroad station. Ground floor retail use would complement
existing commercial uses in the vicinity. In addition, the increased number of
residents, shoppers, workers and other visitors will help enliven Maplewood Village.
