Months after Bank of America closed its branch at Spfld and Prospect, we got word this week that Kari's Cafe, across the street, is closing. And the Liquor Cabinet, a block away, is up for sale, too


Now I see Stories in Motion is set to shutdown. Help!


Well, at least they are spending big money for more bump outs, lamps and trees on the avenue.

Kari's Cafe, a great caffeine and fun sport, will shutdown July 31.


This is the worst news I could have had. But good for her to ease her stress. Give her a good send-off.

FILM CREW IS HERE - DISRUPTION BEGINS

Claims that the cell phone commercial filming in Maplewood Village and at the train station today will not disrupt things are proven false.

This morning, a good chunk of the train station parking lot was off-limits. All for $1575 in fees?

This notice put out by Mayor Vic Deluca today via MOL:

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO COMMUTERS AND SHOPPERS

FOR THURSDAY, JULY 14, 2011 – FILMING IN MAPLEWOOD
VILLAGE - SOME PARKING AFFECTED, PLAN ACCORDINGLY

Parking and business areas may be affected by a filming project on
Thursday, July 14th, beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Maplewood Avenue
and on the platform at the Maplewood Train Station – commuters
should plan accordingly on their commuting times by factoring in
additional time to navigate Maplewood Village and to find alternate
parking in the areas of Maplewood Avenue near Highland Place,
Ricalton Square Lot and Dunnell Road between Oakland Road and Baker
Street. Shoppers should also plan accordingly. 
Township Clerk Liz Fritzen said it is for a cell phone commercial for Click 3X, which is paying the township a whopping $1,575 for the permits.


They also must pay for two police to be on duty.

STATE SCHOOL FUNDING INCREASE

Gov. Chris Christie gives something back to some schools. For South Orange-Maplewood, another $2 million-plus.

MOSQUITO UPDATE

Just saw this posted at MOL from the township's health officer:


From Robert Roe, Health Officer: I am not in the office so I can not answer all the questions, but the following should be helpful. The spraying/fogging is being done by the Essex County Mosquito Control due to the large populations of both culex and tiger mosquito populations. The spraying provides a quick kill of the adult mosquito population. The spray has a very short residue time of only a few hours and it is not dangerous to humans or pets. While you may want to close windows, it is not necessary. No cases of West Nile virus disease have been reported yet so far this summer, but most cases are usually found in mid to late summer. The tiger mosquitoes are the ones that bite even in broad sunny day light. Both these types of mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. In hot weather it may take only five days for a mosquito to mature from egg to larva to adult. Eliminate all stagnant water sources including tires (a favorite breeding site of the tiger mosquito), buckets and cans even as small as an empty cat food can. Unused back yard pools can be a large breeding ground. Just got this warning from the Township. 


But, of course, no word on what we should do, if anything, to be careful. 


Gotta love incomplete government information:

PLEASE BE ADVISED that the Essex County Mosquito Commission will be in Maplewood tomorrow (Tuesday 7/12) from 3AM to 7AM spraying for mosquito control. They have not provided a schedule or specific areas.
