Judge John Paparazzo of Bloomfield Municipal Court made the ruling this morning after a short hearing that involved claims against bartender James Meade by South Orange resident Ethan Kresofsky.
The case, related to an incident the night of Jan. 7, 2013, was transferred to the Bloomfield Municipal Court because of a conflict involving the South Orange/Maplewood municipal court judge.
At issue is a claim by Kresofsky, 24, that he was attacked by Meade early on Jan. 8, 2013, after asking to be served. He also claimed Meade used an anti-gay slur against him.
"I was there with a few friends. I go up to the bar, I ask him for a drink and he says 'no,'" Kresofsky told the judge in court today. "He says, 'what are you? a fucking faggot?' I said, 'yes, what of it.'"
Kresofsky said Meade then allegedly assaulted him, spit at him and tried to open his mouth with his hands, causing Kresofsky to bite Meade.
Kresofsky said he was punched in the face by Meade and allegedly kicked in the head.
Meade was not in court today, nor was an attorney there on his behalf. St. James Gate issued a statement on the incident in recent weeks.

Judge Paparazzo said the next court date has yet to be set and could held in either Maplewood or Bloomfield. "Where they send the case is not up to me," the judge said.
Also in attendance were two witnesses, who did not speak to the judge. Kresofsky's mother, Eva, also attended.
"This is what we wanted to happen," she said afterward.

I am confused on the ruling by the judge. He ruled probable cause for the assault complaint; shouldn't that be followed with a warrant for his arrest? Or is it a summons for another court date? Anyone know?

Thanks for keeping this in the public eye. I can't believe this is the first time this has happened. I had an issue with the same bartender years ago. He is a complete jerk.
Patch is an advertising circular, not a news source, and MOL kowtows to advertisers. Even if Meade is ultimately convicted, Patch won't run the story because they can't put a smiley-happy face on it.

Ahh, seems Patch finally got permission from the local realtors to touch the story. That, or Carolyn is away and Craig did this without her seeing it.
thanks for having the courage to cover this. the f*ckhead owners of maplewoodonline don't have the guts to allow a discussion of this topic citing not wanting to hire lawsuits for lawyers. but they certainly have no problem raising revenue from their commercial, ad-based website to make a nice profit, which is all based on the readership of their message boards. how's that for cowardice. too bad you don't get a larger platform to put those clowns, teh Ross Brothers, out of business. their failure to cover this issue is a sign of their latent homophobia and contempt for the gay and lesbian community in SOMA.

The entire incident is regrettable. The thing that I find extra troubling is the fact that the young man had exited the building and was leaving when he was again hit, knocked down and allegedly kicked in the head. This could have been fatal.
If these facts prove out I hope there is more than a slap in the wrist given to the bar tender
that's quite a leap - especially given the fact that there's a very energetic conversation going on at that website even as we speak, and with one or two rather transparent exceptions everyone is focused on bringing that bartender to justice.
Remember, it appears that the employee followed the patron out into the street to continue the confrontation. It'll be hard to justify that action if it turns out to be the case.

Thanks for keeping us up to date on this crappy situation. If it weren't for this blog I think much of this would be swept under the rug. I def will not set foot in this establishment anymore, and I've been going there one to two days a week for four years. Jimmy is a muscle head jock who has repeatedly made sexist and homophobic remarks behind the bar.
JImmy Meade back to work at St. James Gate this past weekend.
He almost got into another altercation until someone from the establishment pulles him away. The Gate is the best representation Maplewood has.
Has anyone noticed the Maplewood Police blotter as of late? It isnt updated for the week of this incident but then, the following week's incidents are all listed. Alleged suspects and all.

Following the assault, the victim's [what i would assume are his] friends were shooed away by the police. They could be heard offering their assistance in testimonials to what they witnessed.
Conveniently, the Bartender wasnt at the bar when Police arrived. He wasn't in the bar? His wounds were more severe than the person he kicked in the head?
WHY are none of these issues being addressed? The conduct policy should ne the same when assessing issues dealing with Maplewood merchants!
