STUDENT-RUN SCHOOL LOOKING FOR A HOME?

The News-Record website reports on this odd idea:

MAPLEWOOD/SOUTH ORANGE — Four local residents are currently in search of a space to open a democratic free school to service elementary through high school aged children of South Orange, Maplewood, West Orange, Orange and other municipalities.
Abram Karl-Gruswitz, Angela Wolff, Elizabeth McCarthy and Liliana Gomez hope to set up the South Mountain Co-op, which will be a private school, in time for them to run a camp this summer, as well.
A democratic free school is organized and run differently from public schools: children are free to decide what they will study and when. Additionally, students have a say in the running of the school through participation in weekly meetings — as peers — with the school’s staff.
