MAPLEWOOD — Taking the first full day of his U.S. Senate campaign to the progressive Essex County suburbs just west of his city, Newark Mayor Cory Booker told a receptive audience at a gay pride festival in Maplewood today that he would fight for equality in New Jersey and the nation regardless of race, ethnicity or sexual orientation.
“I am so energized by what’s going on here in Maplewood,” Booker said, launching into a 10-minute speech that reflected the progressive ideals of the hundreds of gay and straight families who cheered him under a brilliant noon-day sun, passionately expressed in patriotic terms. “I am so encouraged when I look at the United States of America and I see so many states starting to shun hatred, shun bigotry, shun divisiveness, and begin, one by one, moving towards a more equal country, where we’re all seeing the truth of the 14th Amendment and becoming more equal under the law.”
